Despite its growing policy impact, the intersection of new technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI) and migration governance remains insufficiently embedded in European studies, limiting the capacity of future policymakers, researchers and practitioners to engage with these developments critically and competently. The core challenge is how to integrate “responsible AI” into European migration governance through a rights-based, human-centric and ethically accountable approach. The Jean Monnet Chair “European Migration Governance and New Technologies in the Age of Artificial Intelligence (EMIG-TECH)” addresses this gap by developing an interdisciplinary teaching and research agenda that deepens understanding of EU migration governance while examining how AI reshapes policy design, implementation and accountability.
EMIG-TECH is delivered by an interdisciplinary team combining (i) EU migration governance and the EU–Türkiye nexus, (ii) EU asylum and international refugee law focused on lawful, rights-based uses of algorithms, (iii) labour and social security law relevant to migrant work authorisations and integration, (iv) qualitative migration research on lived experience and boundary-making, and (v) digital transformation and AI systems literacy. This configuration enables the Chair to connect EU policy frameworks to legal safeguards, empirical evidence and practical implementation dilemmas.
